Is an SBI PO job good or bad?

It’s always been a privilege for any job aspirant to be an integral part of country’s biggest banking organization (SBI). The job of SBI PO is one such job which allures millions of graduates nationwide. But, is it a good career option or not? How does SBI PO work? What is his salary and growth prospect? Every graduate, who is striving hard for the forthcoming SBI PO 2019 exam must be thinking around these questions.

To begin with, an SBI PO gets a probation period of 2 years where he is subjected to frequent trainings and transfers. The job profile of SBI PO is more tedious and burdensome than other bank PO’s but still it’s an enlightening learning experience which helps him in his entire banking career. The main reason is SBI being India’s biggest and most technically advanced bank with branches in every nook and corner of the country.

In SBI, a Bank PO experiences a range of banking activities which also includes working with modernized gadgets and gizmos applied in mobile and internet banking.  SBI PO will be first posted as JMGS Scale 1 officer where he can posted in Local Head Office, Regional Business office, SME Branch, General banking branch or Special Branches or Corporate Office or Zonal Offices or in specialized branches like Cheque Clearing, Pension Clearing etc. for specific time-period as prescribed by the SBI.

So far, we have discussed about nature of work, job profile and status of SBI PO, but the question- Is an SBI PO good or bad?  We would compare the job of SBI PO with any private sector job professional for reference.

As a professional, the first point of consideration or comparison is the salary aspect of the job. Besides job security, SBI PO enjoys healthy salary packages, where his starting basic salary is Rs 27,620/- (with 4 advance increments) in the scale of 23700-980/7-30560-1145/2-32850-1310/7-42020. He is also eligible for D.A, H.R.A/ Lease rental, C.C.A, Medical and other allowances & privileges as per rules in force from time to time. On the other hand, a private job professional earns less than SBI PO and almost 30 to 40% of his salary goes to pay his bills, rent, transportation and other allowances.

In private sector jobs, the professionals are many times have to do night shifts to complete their assignments. On contrary, SBI PO working hours is fixed and rarely has to work extra time in phases like financial year closing, budget sessions etc. SBI PO also enjoys festival holidays every year while private job professionals might have to work on these holidays too. In this way, an SBI PO can strike a balance between work and home, in most convenient way.

The other major aspect of SBI PO job which is attractive is its growth prospects. If you are sincere and hard working SBI PO then you can become Branch Manager in a time period of 3 to 4 years. There are many SBI PO’s who got promoted to post of Chairman in 12 to 15 years of service. In private sector jobs, even in IT sector jobs, a professional reaches to mid-term managerial post in 10 years of service, after lots of tiresome hard work. Despite all sincere hard work, the uncertainty of recession or shut down of organization also looms around them. Recently speaking, there were almost 15,000 job cuts in IT industry, and thousands of software professional came back to India, after years of service in foreign countries. The job of SBI PO is “recession free” and is considered to be one of the formidable and secured Government jobs.

To cut a long story short, SBI PO job is one of the finest jobs, for any job aspirant in India. Firstly, this job is from most flourishing sector (Banking sector) in India and secondly it promises job security, prestige and healthy salary packages with incentives, which is very essential to maintain a wealthy lifestyle.
