Tips to prepare for English Section of SSC CHSL 2019 Tier 1 Exam

SSC CHSL Exam is conducted by Staff Selection Commission (SSC) for Higher Secondary Level aspirants. The competitive exam of SSC CHSL is held in three phases and all phases are important to get qualified in this exam. Hence, the aspirants who are striving hard for SSC CHSL should give importance to all sections of Tier-I to cross the first major step towards acquiring SSC CHSL job.
Tier-I will be an objective which will have four sections and these sections are:-
  1. Quantitative Aptitude
  2. General Intelligence
  3. English Language
  4. General Awareness/General Knowledge
In this article, we will discuss tips to prepare for English Language Section of SSC CHSL Tier-I exam.
English section will have questions from topics like:-
  1. i) Reading Comprehension
  2. ii) Cloze Test
iii)     Idioms & Phrases and one word substitution
  1. iv) Synonyms & Antonyms
  2. v) Sentence Rearrangement
  3. vi) Sentence Improvement
vii)    Spot the Error

If an aspirant wants to master English Language Section then he has to master the grammar rules, vocabulary and understanding of the language flow. The students should also refer to prescribed Grammar Books, Dictionary and Thesaurus to enhance their word power.

i) Reading Comprehension
To master the topic of Reading Comprehension, the students should always try to find the accurate tone and proper idea of the passage. After understanding the main idea and facts described in the passage, it will be easier for them to solve the asked questions. You are supposed to read the question first and read the entire passage to get the answers for the asked questions. The students should practice as much as they can to enhance speed of answering questions. It is a very scoring topic where students have to master the art of reading passage with proper understanding.
ii) Cloze Test
The questions based on Cloze Test will consist of five blanks in a given passage which will be filled by the appropriate words. If you want to get the accurate option then you can eliminate different options. The students should read the passage first without filling the gaps to understand the theme and idea of the passage. It will be easier for you to fill the gaps correctly if you have mastered concepts and grammar rules. You are supposed to practice it hard as questions of this topic are very scoring.   
iii)     Idioms & Phrases and one word substitution
Generally speaking, the section of Idioms & Phrases and one word substitution comprises of 4 questions. You can get the idea of asked questions by solving previous year papers.
iv) Synonyms & Antonyms
The section of Synonyms & Antonyms has two questions. This section can be prepared thoroughly by learning new words from various sources like Newspapers, Magazines, Novels, and News Channels etc. You are supposed to make a note of typical words and find their correct synonyms and antonyms from dictionary.
v) Sentence Rearrangement
The section of Sentence Rearrangement will comprise of two questions which are to be rearranged. In question based on Sentence Rearrangement, a sentence will be given in a jumbled form and the students have to rearrange the sentence in the logical way to get the correct answer.
vi) Sentence Improvement
The section of Sentence Improvement will consist of a sentence with some error or sometimes there is no error. You are supposed to choose the best option which will match the phase being underlined or word being underlined. The student should read the sentence carefully to find the hidden theme in it so that they can choose the right option from the given probable options.
vii)    Spot the Error
The section of Spot the Error will consist of questions based on parts of speech. The students are supposed to pick the error and mark it as the answer. You can master these questions by practicing questions based on parts of speech.
